Did You Know? Dementia and The Power of Art
Introduction
In 2011, the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) created Artful Moments. Our purpose was to provide people living with dementia and their family and friend with an inclusive, engaging, and stimulating experience through art. Over the years, we have discovered some interesting facts about dementia and how art can have a positive impact on wellbeing.
Here are some of our favourite findings:
- Art Can Unlock Memories – Engaging with art can help people living with dementia access long-term memories, as creative activities stimulate brain regions involved in memory and emotion processing.[i]
- Creativity Remains Intact – Many people with dementia retain their ability to create and appreciate art, providing a valuable outlet for self-expression and communication.[ii] This is true for people who have a life-long interest in art and for those who are trying it for the first time!
- Experiences with Art Improves Mood & Reduces Anxiety – Art-based activities have been shown to reduce anxiety and depression in dementia patients by offering a calming and engaging activity.[iii]
- Art Encourages Social Connection – Participating in art programs fosters social interaction, helping to combat feelings of isolation and depression among individuals with dementia.[iv]
- Engaging with Art Encourages Non-Verbal Communication – Art provides an alternative means of expression for those who have experienced changes in their language abilities due to dementia.
- The Science Behind It – Engaging in creative activities can stimulate neural connections, potentially slowing cognitive decline and enhancing overall well-being.[v]
A bit about Artful Moments: A Step Forward
Artful Moments exemplifies how art institutions can play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia while fostering a community of empathy and inclusion. In 2023 we launched Artful Moments: Shared Learning, which encapsulates our experiences and research over the years in an easy-to-use guide for other institutions to build programs of their own.
Below are a few areas where the Artful Moments program has helped our community and other art galleries across Canada.
- Specially Designed Sessions – The program incorporates dementia-friendly training to ensure participants feel comfortable and supported.
- Encourages Engagement & Conversation – Viewing and discussing art allows individuals to engage with their surroundings in a low-pressure, enjoyable way.
- Training for Caregivers & Staff – By equipping museum staff and caregivers with dementia-awareness training, AGH fosters a more compassionate and accessible environment for those affected by dementia.
- Raising Awareness – Programs like Artful Moments highlight the importance of creative engagement in dementia care and contribute to public understanding and acceptance of the condition.
If you have any questions about our programming, please feel free to reach on our contact page.
