Communication and Logistics Copy

An important part of the program preparations and delivery is the communications related to the logistics of the program – things like registration, hand-outs, phone calls and program materials. In all cases, ensure that your methods of communicating reflect your knowledge of dementia, in terms of cognition, language, perception, physical ability and moods and emotions. 

Using more than one method of communication (such as a phone call and a written version) can help support the range of abilities you may see in a group and allow you to further customize as needed. Prioritize communication with the participant wherever possible but connect with a friend or family member as the participant requests. When you are together, always speak to the person, not to someone else about them. Your communication should reinforce the ideals of dignity and independence.

In general:

  • Keep language simple, clear and succinct
  • Simplify words and instructions as much as possible. 
  • Pause or leave space between sentences to allow processing time
  • Reduce distractions – especially sound and visual clutter
  • Avoid extraneous information

Be thoughtful in your approach in all formats to ensure that all communications are made in a way that supports the participant’s abilities. This includes:

  • Reading and printed material
  • Speaking on the phone
  • Virtual Communication
