Our program design, whether this curriculum or an iteration of Artful Moments for a particular audience group is informed by our model for successful engagement, created based on our practice and evaluation of past programs. Inherent in the model is the idea that all components of a program are essential and interconnected. All must be fully applied to achieve the goal of engagement.
This model is made up of several interconnected parts, and guides all aspects of Artful Moments – from our program design through implementation and even training.
The model uses an architectural form – each piece is necessary to build a strong and functional structure. The museum, encompassing its collections, spaces and staff are the foundation. The participant forms a central structure, informing everything else. Three pillars, environment, approach and activity support the key process of the program, engagement which in turn leads to the final outcome, wellbeing. If any of the pillars or the central knowledge are not strong, the roof will fall, or engagement will not occur to its fullest potential. (unnecessary – use a version in methodology?)
This e-learning program is structured to follow this model as well. To build a fully realized program of your own, your knowledge and your design must be strong in each component.
The Museum: Forming the base of the model is the museum, which encompasses the site, its collections and exhibitions, and its staff. Artful Moments is a program built from within the museum, using its assets and creative potential to create a unique, meaningful and specific program. We touch on some of the ideas about museums potential in Module 1, but the core of this component rests with you.
Participant: In a person-centred program, the understanding of the participant and their particular circumstances – the who – is central. Everything else is built from this knowledge and refers back to it. (Module 2)
Environment: This is where of the program – the physical and social space. A well considered environment must apply the knowledge of the participants to support engagement. (Module 3)
Approach: This is how we do it. Approach is about communication, facilitation and attitudes. Our approach is customized to suit the needs and abilities of the participant. (Module 4)
Activity: This is what we do – the content of conversations and hands-on activities. Well planned activity incorporates knowledge of the participant to support and respond to the participant. (Module 5)
Engagement: This is why we do it, the process used by the program to achieve the outcome of wellbeing. We work to capture the interest and attention of participants through experiences that support their abilities, fostering connections and encourage participation in whatever form that takes for each individual. (Module 6)
This leads to Wellbeing, the desired outcome of the experience. Wellbeing can encompass balance in many areas, including positive feelings, self esteem, social connection and more. We will explore the idea of wellbeing in Module 6 as we discuss outcomes and evaluation.
