Welcome to Module 4 Copy

Welcome to Artful Moments-Shared Learning Module 4: Understanding Approach. Here will explore strategies to interact with and support participants in a way that encourages their engagement.

The goal for this module is for you to be able to use a person-centred approach that is informed by your knowledge of dementia and an understanding of your participants in your own Artful Moments-style program.

By the end of this Module you will be able to:

  • Describe the components of a person-centred approach
  • Describe techniques you can use in your approach to conversations about your collections and exhibitions to support a positive and engaging experience for participants.
  • Describe techniques you can use in your approach to hands-on activities to support a positive and engaging experience for participants.
  • Compare and contrast this approach to facilitation to what you are currently doing in other programs.

There are many factors to consider when you plan interactions with participants – the changes in abilities caused by dementia that each person may experience, their comfort and familiarity with museums and your site specifically, the type of activities that you have planned and their individual preferences and communication styles.  It can seem like a lot to remember.  Above all else, it is important to remember to keep the individual in the forefront.  Each person is unique, and your approach to them should reflect that.
